Mark Cooper is no stranger to the Kettering Town and Rushden & Diamonds derby clashes.
And the Poppies manager is expecting another full-blooded affair when the two sides meet for their first league meeting in more than seven years at the A-Line Arena on Saturday.

Cooper played in three county derbies against the Poppies during his time at Nene Park.

And, in one infamous incident, his tackle on Paul Raynor in the 0-0 draw at Rockingham Road in March 1999 sparked a brawl which resulted in then Diamonds striker Darren Collins being sent off.

The Poppies boss is well aware of how much the game means to both sets of fans. But he is firmly focused on trying to lead his team to a positive result.

"Historically it is a full-blooded game and I hope it is the same on Saturday but, of course, it must be played in the right
manner," Cooper said.

"It will require cool heads and discipline but I am sure it will have all the ingredients to make it a proper local derby.

"There is obviously local pride at stake but when it comes down to it, it's a game that's worth three points and we will prepare for it like any other match."

The Poppies will head into the clash as the underdogs with Garry Hill's men being tipped as one of the sides expected to challenge for promotion from the Blue Square Premier.

Both sides are unbeaten with Kettering having registered three draws while the Diamonds have collected seven points from their first three matches.

And Cooper knows his team will have to be on top of their game if they are to claim the bragging rights.

"They are a very good side," Cooper admitted.

"We will have to be 100 per cent at it if we are to stand of chance of getting a good result.

"But if we keep our side of the bargain and make it difficult for them then we will be in with a chance."
